The first day of the school year, I engaged my students in a self-reflection activity called "Who I am," which was created by Paul Gorski for the EdChange project. This activity is a self-reflective writing assignment, and consists in asking the students to describe themselves - in their own words who they are and what is most important to their identities. The only requirement would be that each statement should start with "I am ..." I then proceeded to read my personal "I am ... " to my students.

Here is a sample of my personal reflection:

I am Andean mountain, and of Quechuan descent; I am "ari", "si" and "yes";
I am blue oceans, humpback whales, and pink Amazon River dolphin;
I am a Great Dane named Cookie who should have been named cake instead;
